Please note that due to the small quantity of this coffee this is a PRE ORDER which will ship/be ready for pickup on December 13th at noon.

In the spirit of the Holiday season (or really just for the sake of doing it) we like to carry a very special coffee this time of year. We try to find something that not only stands out in complexity and flavor but also something a bit more rare and exclusive.

We've been working with Ricardo Zelaya for the bulk of our Guatemala offerings this year so purchasing a small amount of this already small (300lb) Gesha lot was a no-brainer for us. If you're not familiar with the Gesha (often times spelled Geisha) varietal then you're probably curious why it carries such a hefty price tag. If nothing else the complexity and particularity of the growing process produces a ton of extra labor. On top of that the sorting process is extra meticulous which creates a lot of coffee that doesn't make the cut and as such the price for this exquisite lot comes in a bit higher than usual.

That said, this coffee is very much an experience and one to be shared at that. Loaded with florals and delicate fresh fruit notes, we recommend taking a little more time with your brew and sipping extra slow. This coffee really opens up as it cools and the nuanced aspects that are characteristic of the Gesha varietal really shine.

8oz of coffee is packaged in an embossed airtight bag inside of an embossed box with a screen printed band. Includes an info card on the Gesha varietal. Limited to 45.

As a closing note - here are some words from Ricardo Zelaya himself:

“We are always looking into new varieties and processes in order to have more offerings for our clients. We are continuously on the lookout to what is trending in the coffee market in order to be up to date.

10 years ago, we first heard about the Geisha variety and we were very intrigued by the comments of its quality. We were able to cup it in a session done by Anacafé, where we convinced ourselves to plant the variety in the farm.

The seed was a gift from a friend; it was brought from Malawi. This is the reason why our Geisha cup is different from the majority of other Geishas’ grown in Central America (The Geisha from Panama).

It was an old seed, so it was a bit of a challenge to make it germinate and to raise our nursery. Only 15 plants survived of the 500 that we planted. The survivors are the mother plants of our Geisha plantations.

We do not have much yet, one hectare in production and one more we recently just planted.

The plantation is in one of the highest areas of the farm. It’s located between 1,750-1,850 masl, because this variety needs to be planted at a very high altitude in order to adapt well.

So far, we are very happy with this variety and its quality, and so are our customers who constantly express their love for it. The Malawi Geisha is definitely a little treasure of the farm!”
