Rwanda Kigoma - Umurage Washing Station

Kiwi - Pomegranate - Toasted Malt - Cinnamon - Cardamom

The Umurage washing station is owned by Buf Cafe in Rwanda (we've carried coffee from a handful of their stations this year). Umurage purchases cherries from 412 smallholder farms and provides a handful of full time jobs and lots of seasonal work for the locals.

The farms supplying Umurage would otherwise be unable to make a profit on their harvest, in most cases the farms were passed down through families that have always been involved in coffee production. Because these farms are generally very small they aren't able to produce enough quality harvest to export on their own. Buf isn't the first organization to lend a hand in getting product outside of the country but they are one of the few with a unique profit sharing model which further helps the farmers and processing stations.

The lot we received from Umurage is overall very complex and nuanced, it's easy to overlook the beauty of some of the more 'savory' notes we get as a brewed coffee. There's some light herbaceousness sort of like thai basil or marjoram. The overall flavor is bright and tart, pomegranate and kiwi are the first flavors to come to mind followed by a nice toasted malt structure.
